PLAN EFFECTIVELY

Strategic planning benefited greatly from the seminal work of Peter Drucker and others, particularly from the 1960s through the 1980s.

The six keys to effective strategic planning are:

  • Involvement: Taking advantage of the brainpower of all constituent groups without taxing their resources or willingness to participate
  • Education: Bringing all participants up to speed on all critical issues, from global trends to market and internal opportunities and threats before asking for their input.
  • Simplicity: Automating the process to enable everyone to participate without creating higher workloads.
  • Transparency and Security: Insuring the automated sharing of appropriate information among participants, but retaining confidentiality from the outside world as needed.
  • Measurability: Letting the system support establishment of goals and tracking against them, with 24/7 access to all responsible individuals.
  • Consistency: Establishing an annual or ongoing planning process, thereby avoiding the high overhead of one-time plans and unmet participant expectations.
