Marketing research, as a discipline. coalesced after World War II through the work of consumer product companies such as Proctor & Gamble. Industrial and commercial research followed in the 1960s and 1970s.

It seems so simple now - Hit the Google button and choose from a world of resources. In contrast, when I began with technology leader Lord Corporation in 1968, we collected all available literature on industrial marketing research. Everything we could find fit in just three 1" 3-ring binders. We had to create as we went, developing our own approaches and even some statistical methods.
